8 Consejos para Vivir con Perros Ancianos. Eight Tips for Living with Older Dogs

As our pets get older we have to change the activities we do with it and how to cope with life.
1. Change physical activities for a lighter. As they become older they become more calm, relaxed and need to move less. Take a walk instead of running, if the dog fatigues when you throw the ball, change it to a string one, as the ball doesn´t wheel, it forces him to run less.
2. Change the habits of ride. Walk during the same time but divided into more rides. Go out with him 4 or 5 times. His bladder with age can begin to retain less and he will be more comfortable.
3. Change the way of spending time with him. Snuggle up on the couch, massaging joints, playing at home with him calmly... Create touching moments that you can save in the memory forever.
4. Elderly dogs need more rest and a soft and comfortable place because their joints suffer less and if  possible made of a  temperature controller material (type viscoelastic) allowing them to remain cool in summer and warm in winter.
5. It is better to prevent than cure. Make sure that his health is good and never ignore new symptoms. Now their ability to recover is worse so it is important to detect problems early.
6 Redesign your home. Make your home a safe place and facilitate their movements that begin to be complicated. A footrest may serve to help him to get on the sofa, a small ramp to facilitate the dog getting into the car or carpets on the floor will make their joints suffer less walking through warm, padded and non-slip sites.
7 Update their toys. That he is getting older does not mean that he doesn´t wish to play, the game is a very important part in the daily life of a dog. It is important to ensure that he has appropriate toys. Trademarks are now beginning to manufacture toys for seniors, as the Kong senior. Check that they are adapted to his teeth and gums and can not  cause damage, that are easy to see, by the decrease in vision and mild action to protect the joints and muscles from the impacts of jumping or racing.
It is also important to include cognitive toys, such as canines puzzles... to maintain the mind of the dog in an active way.
8 Change his diet. The  dog might need a softer diet or  nutritionally adequate to their age. Digestions may be heavier, calorie needs are lower. Big trademarks have ranges of food for this stage.
