Cocker Spaniel

English Cocker Spaniel

American Cocker Spaniel

The Cocker Spaniel is one of several types of spaniel and there are two varieties, English Cocker Spaniel and American Cocker Spaniel, that resulted from the adaptation of English Cocker to the United States in 19th century but American and English varieties had become noticeably differet that in 1940 were recognised as separate breeds.
English Cocker Spaniel is originally from Wales but the name comes from the french "espaigneul" that means "spanish dog" in reference to Spain, the country of origin of the first Spaniels that arrived to England.
The cocker were the smallest dog of the litters of spaniels hunters and were used to lift small prey, especially quail.
Cocker is a sturdy and atletic, compact and well-balanced dog. Ears are the most characteristic in breed, should be lobular, low-set, long and should reach past the tip of the nose when pulled forward. They come in solid, particoloured and roan types of markings. The coat is silky and straight, and the bottom and legs should have fringe. Cockers are alert, intelligent, kind, loyal and curious, and need for love. They like open spaces and exercise and doesn´t like being alone. This is a good breed as a pet althoug some studies concluded that red/golden cocker were more likely to be agressive in stress situations compared with other breeds. By the opposite, American Cocker is known as the "Merry Cocker" because of its temperament.
Cockers are susceptible of infections affecting their ears because of the anatomy. It´s recommended to cut the hair around the ears to aerify and avoid humidity that can generate infections, parasite and spikes.
